Dr Donald H. Meichenbaum, PhD

Dr Donald H. Meichenbaum, PhD is an internationally renowned clinical psychologist, researcher, and one of the principal architects of modern Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). He is often referred to as “the Freud of CBT” in recognition of his foundational influence on the field. Dr Meichenbaum is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the scientific understanding of cognition, emotion, and behavioural change.
He is widely recognised for developing Cognitive Behaviour Modification, a foundational framework that helped shape contemporary CBT, and for creating Stress Inoculation Training (SIT)—one of the earliest and most influential evidence-based interventions for stress-related disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His contributions have had a profound and lasting impact on clinical psychology, psychotherapy training, psychological resilience, grief work, and trauma treatment worldwide. In surveys published in American Psychologist, Dr Meichenbaum was ranked among the ten most influential psychotherapists of the twentieth century.
A substantial proportion of the theoretical principles and clinical methods underpinning NeuroAffective-CBT have been influenced by Daniel Mirea’s close collaboration with Dr Meichenbaum. This partnership has informed the integrative, humane, and evidence-informed ethos of the NA-CBT model.

In the latter part of his career, Dr Meichenbaum served as Research Director of The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment in Miami, Florida. The Institute is dedicated to reducing violence and trauma through research, clinical intervention, professional training, and community-based prevention initiatives. In this role, Dr Meichenbaum was instrumental in translating research on trauma, resilience, and recovery into practical, evidence-informed interventions for individuals, families, and communities affected by violence and adversity.
